With my solo D&D Red Box Adventure well underway, I was eager to get back in the saddle at a table. Sure, it’d been literally the last millennium when I’d last rolled a D20, but it couldn’t be that hard, could it?

Waking up in the middle of the night isn’t terribly uncommon; my latest iPhone gadget is a motion sensor that wears like a watch and records your nightly movements–it confirms that I wake up nearly ten times per night.
This particular time, however, was a bit different. The dream that I had roused from was so utterly vivid; a bright memory of darkened hallways, sooty torches, arched stonework, vast piles of treasure, and might battles. A sound echoed in my mind, the tumbling of an unmistakable item booming as it fell. In my mind’s eye I could see… a twenty sided die. It’s finally happened: Nintendo has announced their next console system, and boy is it a doozy. Some analysts had suggested that we were just going to see an HD version of the Wii, but what we got was so much more.
The Wii U is a console system with a unique controller – sounds familiar, right? Unlike the motion controlled Wii, the Wii U controller features an integrated touch-screen, two analog sticks, a barrel full of buttons, a mic, speakers, a camera, a gyroscope and an accelerometer. In short, this this is an iPad on steroids.
Take a minute to take that in, then realize that the possibilities here are almost endless. The interaction between your controller screen and your TV has just become much more real, adding touch to games in a way that has never before been possible. The controller still supports motion control, but allows for more options than ever before. You can even transfer full games from your Wii U to the controller, so you can finally end the issue of who gets the TV when So You Think Canada Can Dance Idol is on.
Futhermore, it supports all existing controllers, so yes, you can still enjoy your favourite Wii games with Wii U.
For hardcore gamers, Nintendo is back with a vengeance. The lineup listed includes Batman: Arkham City, Darksiders II, Ghost Recon Online, and more.
If they can nail the price on this (and that’ll be a toughie, given the amazing controller that it comes with.. I wonder how much those will be separately…) the Wii U is going to be a rollicking success.
