Say a command: bad BlackBerry design.

On May 31, 2010, in opinion, tech, by Graham

I’m a BlackBerry fan. Growing up just outside of Waterloo, Ontario and going to UW as a young guy, it’s hard not have a soft spot in my heart for Research in Motion. I can remember selling an original BlackBerry 957 to Karen Redman, Liberal MP for KW going back nearly a decade ago – and I still have my 950 and 957 hanging around somewhere.

Which is why it’s so painful to admit that there are things about my current ‘Berry that make me want to smash it. The slow browsing is up there. The laggy interface definitely climbs the list. But there’s one thing that makes me want to huck as far as I can:

“Say a command!”

I think I have a pavlovian flinch when I hear that now. It’s the audible prompt that comes out of the phone’s speakerphone (quite loudly) whenever the speakerphone softkey is ever so slightly depressed. And that happens a lot.

There are a few problems here:

  • the button isn’t recessed, so it triggers ALL THE TIME
  • I actually need voice dial from time to time, so setting it to another function is a pain in the rear
  • even if the volume is turned down on the phone it still blares “SAY A COMMAND” when hit – perfect for disrupting meetings.

It may seem like a small thing, but it’s enough to drive me iPhone-wards come July. Maybe. If I can get over the iPhone not having BBM.

Which is really unlikSAY A COMMAND.

iPhone it is!

Would it be worse if it said, “Say a command, Graham…”?

Jeff reprogrammed his button to pull up his contacts.
